Salty Dawg Blow Out Play Martha Salt Music January 14 2022. Originals and cuts from the greats – Losing Hand (Ray Charles), Loving Cup (Paul Butterfield), Could’ve Had Religion (Junior Wells / Rory Gallagher) and Gamblers Blues (Lightning Hopkins) plus many more. Great blues, style and attitude to burn. Hell yeah!!
Salty Dog (aka Dennis ‘Salty’ Trevarthen) began a love affair with the blues in his early teens, seeking out and listening to the greats John Lee Hooker, Muddy and Junior Wells among many others. But it was as an eighteen year old when Australia’s mighty CHAIN caught him off guard. Matt Taylor and band belted and howled out a version of Wells ‘Snatch it Back and Hold it” and he was hooked. From them on the harmonica took on new meaning, and blowing Dylan on the wire rack wasn’t enough. Fast forward to the 2000’s and Salty was blowing with Melbourne’s Elwood Blues Club every Sunday night – at the old Greyhound and later The Prince on Fitzroy St. Salty had also played a Kansas band ‘Moreland & Arbuckle’ on his regular blues radio/podcast (www.salty.com.au) and in early 2017 toured the band across Aust. Their live version of ‘The Legend of John Henry’ hit hard, and Salty began blowing this one with the band and the punters went wild. A band was born, and the Salty Dawg Blow Out got its legs.
And so, The Blow Out emerged from the dark recesses of St. Kilda’s Prince Hotel Public Bar. The Blow Out played Bendigo Blues Fest in 2019 and were booked on the spot, and again in early 2021 at the St Kilda Blues Fest. Morgan Klose brings finger style acid blues on the electric, Pete Hodges mirrors the great Charlie Watts with his jazz and blues sensibilities, and Boom Boom Beulke has held the bass with just about every blues/roots/country act in the country. The band is currently recording a new album at Paulie Bignell’s Hailstone Studio, with both classic cuts and original blues. Come and hear what the buzz is all about!
